Health Effects of High THC in Cannabis
Health Effects of High THC in Cannabis
THC or tetra hydro
cannabinol is probably the one of the most active chemicals in the
marijuana plant along with CBD Cannabidiol. According to the National
Insititute of Drug abuse, it acts much like the cannabinoid chemicals
responsible for most of marijuana’s psychological effects.
How it is used?
People smoke marijuana in
pipes or in hand rolled cigarettes. They also smoke it in blunts (an
emptied cigars that are completely or partially refilled with
marijuana. More people use vaporizers to avoid inhaling the smoke.
These devices help to pull the THC from the marijuana and store their
vapors in a separate unit. Through this procedure, a person does not
inhale the smoke.
Effects Of High THC
Marijuana is the most
common and widely used illegal drug among the youth today. The amount
of the THC in marijuana has been increasing steadily, creating more
harmful effects for users. Several studies clearly show that the use
of marijuana containing higher levels of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)
can contribute to health effects. It can also increase the chance of
addiction and increase mental and physical health risks.
Short term Effects:
THC quickly passes from
the lungs to the bloodstream when a person smokes marijuana. When it
reaches the brain it over-activates the parts of brain that contain
cannabinoid receptors. This causes the "high" that users
feel. Other effects include:
- Impaired memory
- Problem solving and difficulty with thinking
- Impaired body movement
- Changes in mood
- Altered sense of time
- Altered senses (such as seeing bright colors)
- Dizziness, red eyes and dilated pupils
- Dry mouth and increased appetite
Physical Effects:
Increased Heart Rate:
Smoking marijuana that contains higher THC can increase your
heart rate for up to 3 hours. This may increase the possibility of
getting a heart stroke. It can also affect blood sugar level, lower
blood pressure and increase bleeding.
Problems with child
development during and after pregnancy: the
use of marijuana during the pregnancy can cause behavioral problems
in babies and also increase the chances of brain abnormalities. The
drug containing higher THC may affect the certain developing parts of
the fetus brain, which may trigger several problems associated with
memory, attention and problem solving.
Breathing Problems:
Frequent marijuana smokers can have the same breathing problems
that tobacco smokers have. These problems include a higher risk of
lung infection, lung illness, daily cough and phlegm. Researchers are
still clueless whether THC is linked to the possibility of getting
lung cancer or not, but it do cause other severe breathing issues.
Mental Effects:
The use of marijuana for
longer period of time can cause mental illness in some users such as,
- Temporary hallucinations- a feeling or sensation that seem real but they are not.
- Worsening symptoms in patients with schizophrenia – a severe mental disorder with symptoms such as disorganized thinking, paranoia and hallucinations.
- Temporary paranoia- unreasonable and extreme distrust of others.
- The use of marijuana has also been linked to other mental health problems such as suicidal thoughts, anxiety and depression among teens.
